Balancing Bot Leads the Way

Balancing Bot Leads the Way Balancing Bot Leads the Way Balancing Bot Leads the WayIt all started 12 years ago with the ballbot, a robot with a tall, thin body that moves in any direction, responds to a slight push, and balances atop a sphere slightly smaller than a bowling ball.Though the robot is perfectly suited to helping the elderly or disabled within their homes, researchers knew the rolling mechanism could be simplified to reduce maintenance and cut costs.Enter SIMbot. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University recently improved upon their robot.Ballbot inventor Ralph Hollis calls the ball-balancing design a new, fundamental method of locomotion for robots. Hollis and Masaaki Kumagai, a prof of engineering at Tohoku Gakuin University in Japan, designed SIMbot along with graduate students.Yet that ball-driving mechanism is rather complicated, says Hollis, a professor at CMUs Robotics Institute. It uses five motors and there are belts and friction elements. So thats where SIMbot comes in.Though SIMbot relies on a rolling mechanism similar to ballbot, it includes just one moving part the ball.SIMbots spherical induction motor (thus the SIM) eliminates the mechanical drive systems used on previous ballbots. The new motor can also move the ball in any direction using only electronic controls. These movements keep SIMbots body balanced atop the ball, Hollis says.Former CMU robotics student Greg Seyfarth poses next to SIMbot, which he helped work on. Image Carnegie Mellon UniversityBalance Is KeyWhat weve been trying to do with ballbot for a long time is to show it can do anything any other mobile robot can do, but also do a lot more because of the balancing and the omnidirectional behavior, Hollis says.Weve shown it can roll at about two meters per second faster than a rolles fast walk. And we can put arms on it so it can lead a person through a room, navigating while applying urging forces to the person while balancing, he adds.Balance is key, Hollis says. Sho uld the person the robot leads stumble or change direction, the robot remains balanced and upright. That means it can lead and guide disabled people, such as those who are blind or have difficulty with mobility. The ballbot can also lean over to assist a person in rising from a chair, carry packages, place items on a tabletop, and carry items on a tray-like surface among other tasks. But unlike ballbots complicated drive system, SIMbot has almost no mechanics. Basically, SIMbot is a robot made up of a body and a ball, Hollis says. The frame is a copy of ballbot and we demonstrated that it could have performance similar to ballbot.Whats more, because of its mechanical simplicity, SIMbot requires less routine maintenance and is less likely to suffer mechanical failures says Michael Shomin, a Ph.D. student in robotics who is part of Holliss team. The new motor can move the ball in any direction using only electronic controls. The rotor of the spherical induction motor is a machined, holl ow iron ball with a copper shell. Current is induced in the ball with six laminated steel stators, each with three-phase wire windings.Belts that drive the rollers wear out and need to be replaced, he says. And when the belts are replaced, the system needs to be recalibrated. The new motors solid-state system eliminates that type of maintenance. The six stators generate travelling magnetic waves in the ball, causing the ball to move in the direction of the wave. The direction of the magnetic waves can be steered by altering the currents in the stators.Future RedesignThough SIMbot does move as fast as the ballbot, it uses twice as much power to function as does its mechanical counterpart.Hollis and Kumagai intend to redesign the ball using different materials and making other design and software changes to improve motor efficiency. They also expect costs for the mechanically simple motor to fall in comparison with the ballbot motor. The tall and skinny SIMbot can be just as helpful to people as Hollis expects the ballbot to be. Really, these types of robots are ideal human helpers, he says. They cant get trapped in any cluttered space, they can go through narrow doorways. And if they run into something they can yield, he says. And with arms, they assist people mechanically. All that capability is currently in the ballbot and can be transferred to the SIMbot.Jean Thilmany is an independent writer.Basically SIMbot is a robot made up of a body and a ball. The frame is a copy of ballbot and we demonstrated that it could have performance similar to ballbot.Prof. Ralph Hollis, CMU

Talent Assessments An Integral Piece of Cultural Hiring - Spark Hire

Talent Assessments An Integral Piece of Cultural Hiring - Spark HireTalent assessments have been around for some time now and companies are starting to utilize unterstellung tools more frequently. Perhaps you are thinking about implementing a talent assessment into your hiring process, or maybe you wish to better utilize a current assessment that is already integrated within your hiring process. Either way, it is important for you to understand that talent assessments are extremely valuable tools when it comes to determining cultural fit.How does a talent assessment work? You will find that most talent assessments will provide you with a profile of a candidate based on historical data that has been accrued from many other people who have been assessed over time. This data can be very helpful in allowing you to determine, along with your interview assessments of the candidate, what type of work habits and tendencies the candidate has, as well as the type of job and work culture the can didate is a better fit for.I recommend that you have only candidates in the final round of interviews complete a talent assessment. This saves you a lot of money and time, in that you are only having candidates complete the assessments that you have thoroughly interviewed and are serious about. When you are ready for a candidate to complete the talent assessment, you will simply provide him a website or form to complete. Typically, the candidate will read questions and select multiple choice answers. Once the candidate has completed the assessment, he will submit it to the talent assessment company which will in turn assess the candidates answers and produce a profile. Normally, you receive the results within a day or so.What will a talent assessment tell me about a candidate?Typically, you will learn if the candidate performs well in high stress or fast paced environments or performs best in low stress and more steadily paced environments. You also may learn if the candidate require s a lot of attention and instruction, or if he is a go-getter who requires very little hands-on attention.Talent assessments will also tell you if the candidates profile is better suited for a sales, customer service, or administrative type of role.Overall, a talent assessment can help to answer any unanswered questions that you may have regarding the candidates work habits, tendencies, and cultural fit.How should a talent assessment factor into my hiring decision? As always, candidate profiles from talent assessments should not be hiring decision makers on their own. Normally, when you hire a company to conduct your talent assessments, a specialist from the company will take time to review and explain the results with you. During this time, you will typically receive guidance from the specialist such as further questions to ask the candidate or their references in order to confirm or clear up any suspicions.Having a specialist spend time with you, explaining the results, is a valuab le tool in itself. Talent assessments can be quite confusing with many graphs and charts. If the company you are working with offers their services in walking you through the results, I highly recommend you take them up on this. In the past, on these valuable phone calls, I would even ask the specialist how the candidate compared to the results of others I had hired in the past. This was helpful in comparing past or current employeescultural fit and how the reviewed profile would typically fit into our culture.Have you found talent assessments helpful in cultural hiring? Please share your thoughts in the comments below.Image Olivier Le Moal/BigStock.com

One-Page Resume Too Short For Impressive Career

One-Page Resume Too Short For Impressive CareerOne-Page Resume Too Short For Impressive CareerOne corporate and geschftsleben counsel updates his resume with help from a certified professional resume writer.David Pearls one-page resume welches deceptively stark.Pearl, 56, was a successful lawyer he was a professor of business law and aviation law, he had been Navy fighter pilot, he managed more than 300 people as a Navy officer, he had experience in publishing and public speaking and for five years, he was a senior executive at the Boy Scouts of America. The basics were tightly represented on his single-page resume, but the impact of his accomplishments was not. For instance, his experience managing an international staff was no where to be found, said Elizabeth Macfarlane, a certified professional resume writer who works with Ladders and helped Pearl craft a new resume.Pearl said he was following ancient and sacred advice A resume must fit on a single page.I had been taught that resu mes were supposed to be one page, Pearl says. If you cant put it on one page, go back to the drawing board. Many job seekers follow this advice, which goes back to the days when resume were stored in filing cabinets and space was a concern, Macfarlane said. But resumes are transmitted and stored as computer files and space is no longer a concern. The one-page rule no longer applies and will actually harm a jobseeker like Pearl, who has a long and distinguished career, Macfarlane said.Dont be shyThis type of reticence can be common in senior-level executives, and even in the case of an individual like Pearl, who prides himself on his editing skills. He said that even with his vast experience in editing and writing as a lawyer, the resume that came out of his rewrite was something he couldnt have gone ahead and done for himself, Macfarlane said. Even with experience, youre sometimes not able to brand yourself appropriately as one of our experts would.Pearl is self-effacing in conversatio n, making it easy to see where his modesty at branding himself comes from. There was a lot of terminology Elizabeth Macfarlane used in my resume that was foreign to me, he says. I didnt put in words like C-level executive or things like that. Im still not sure I know what a C-level executive is.But while he might feel that, in his own words, hes a sows ear being made to look like a silk purse, there are in fact no untruths in his new resume. The resume he and Macfarlane worked out doesnt stretch the truth of his vast accomplishments and qualities - it simply unearths diamonds that were hidden. It would never occur to me in 1,000 years to do some of the things she had done, he says.Brand yourselfWhat exactly did Macfarlane do? With a varied career in business and law, Pearl had difficulty focusing his resume. So Macfarlane started the rewrite by focusing. She delved into the law area of Pearls career, then into his international and business development experience, including his abil ity to work with and manage people. Because Pearl is open to opportunities beyond law, Macfarlane wanted to emphasize these additional capabilities.Macfarlane also created a personal brand statement, hoping to brand Pearl by narrowing his career down to three areas1. Successful litigation experience2. Business wertzuwachs improvement, streamlining and ensuring process improvements, and achieving unparalleled, record-breaking business results3. Business and fundraising experience, reflected in his work with the Boy ScoutsThe importance of this branding piece of the puzzle cant be overstated. Macfarlane believes that branding is key to success in todays challenging work- search environment. And in such an environment, its crucial that individuals dig deeper to identify accomplishments, she says, in order to build their own brand and to bring value to employers by being clear about exactly what theyre bringing to the table.Pearls revamped resume is now more than one page, but its also much easier for a potential employer to grasp who this corporate and business counsel professional is and where hes been, with a title that clearly says just that Corporate Business Counsel.Pearls new resume also contains a list of keywords that will ensure that electronic resume processing software picks his resume out of the slush pile, a summary statement that fleshes out those keywords with the context that both sophisticated resume-parsing software and human eyes require, and a branding section that leaves no question as to what Pearl is all about. After looking at the new resume, its plain to Pearl that he is now presenting himself to employers in a much more coherent way. ( After reading the new resume,) I said Boy, I sound a lot better when I read through this now, he says.

Dont try to fake confidence - do this instead

Dont try to fake confidence - do this insteadDont try to fake confidence - do this insteadThink about a time when you needed to project confidence but felt uncertain or insecure. How did you handle it? Did you try to hide your insecurity and just fake it until you make it?If you did, it probably didnt work. The problem is that attempting to suppress genuine emotions requires so much conscious effort that it is rarely successful. Whenever you attempt to conceal any strong feeling and fake another, your body almost always leaks nonverbal cues that are picked up consciously or subconsciously by your audience.Stanford Universitys research on emotional suppression shows why its so difficult to hide your true feelings Subjects instructed to conceal their emotions reported feeling ill at ease, distracted and preoccupied. And this welches validated by a steady rise in their blood pressure. But another, quite unexpected and (for our purposes) much more important finding showed a corresponding blood pressure rise in those listening to the subjects. The stress of suppression wasnt just palpable it was contagious. But if faking confidence doesnt work, what does? Here are three proven techniques1. Become an actorYear ago, when I was a member of a repertory theater group, I learned that acting isnt about suppression, pretending, or faking. It is about finding an authentic place.During the late 1800s, an approach to acting was developed by a Russian actor, director and coach, Constantin Stanislavsky. Called Method acting (or more simply, the Method) it was adopted by a new school of realistic actors including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, and Robert DeNiro. The Method held that an actors main responsibility was to be believed, and to reach this level of believable truth, Stanislavsky employed methods such as emotional memory which drew on real but past emotions. For example, to prepare for a role that involves fear, an actor would remember something that had frightened him or her i n the past, and bring that memory into the current role to make it emotionally valid. As a leader, salesperson, or job candidate, you have different goals than an actor in a play, but projecting a sense of confidence and conviction when uncertain takes fundamentally the same process. For example, if you were a manager who wanted to exude confidence at an upcoming executive meeting, but were unsure of yourself, here is how youd use the techniqueYoud begin by thinking of an occasion in the past where you were genuinely confident and successful. (This doesnt have to be taken from your professional life - although Id urge you to keep a business successes log so that, whenever you need a positive boost, you could quickly remind yourself of how good you are But whats really important here is identifying the right set of emotions.)The next step is to picture that past situation clearly in your mind. As you do, remember how it felt to be confident, enthused, and assured. It also helps to re call, or imagine, how you looked and sounded as you embodied that state of mind. The last step is to picture yourself at the upcoming meeting with the same attitude of self-confidence that you had in the past. The more you repeat this mental rehearsal - seeing yourself at the upcoming meeting, assured, poised, and confident, the more you increase your ability to make your presentation with the same set of authentic, positive emotions.2. Expand your bodyYou already know that the way you feel is reflected in your body. If youre depressed or discouraged, youre likely to round your shoulders, slump and look down. And when youre upbeat and self-assured, you straighten you posture, pull back your shoulders, and hold you head high. But did you also realize that just by putting your body in a compressed or expansive posture, you trigger the corresponding emotions?Posture has a powerful influence on your attitude and the way that others perceive you. Researchers at Harvard and Columbia busine ss schools found that expansive poses increase feelings of power and a higher tolerance for risk. They also validated what Ive always known to be true that people are more influenced by how they feel about you than by what you say. When you physically expand your body - think Superman or Wonder Woman - standing with your feet wide apart and hands on your hips, you being to feel more like a super-heroOf course, youd want to assume this pose somewhere in private before the meeting starts. And it you have no time to find a private spot, be sure that you dont compress your body in a hunched position over your smart phone while waiting. It would be better to bring a newspaper so that your arms open wide. Just remember to sit up straight as you read it.3. Dress for successThe old saying, You cant judge a book by its cover may be true, but book jacket and product packaging designers around the world have created an industry betting that people do judge (and purchase) products based on ho w they look. And career counselors mucksmuschenstill advise their clients to dress for the job they want - not the job they currently have.Your appearance plays a huge role in creating an impression of authority and credibility. The better dressed someone is, the more apt we are to believe them and to follow their suggestions - even if those suggestions are visual and subtle. One research study shows that a jaywalking man in a business suit will have pedestrians follow him as he crosses the street - but not so if the same man jaywalks wearing casual attire. It has also been proven that people are more likely to give money (charitable donations, tips, etc.) or information to someone if that person is well dressed. It is also true that clothing has an effect on the wearer. If you dont believe that what you wear has a big impact on your own emotional state, just watch actors go through their first dress rehearsal and youll see firsthand the amazing transformation that happens only wh en they dress for the part.So dont try to fake confidence. Instead, genuinely project it through tapping authentic emotions, expanding your posture, and dressing for successCarol Kinsey Goman, Ph.D., is an international keynote speaker and leadership presence coach.
